Doubling the railway

The design support is doubled.

Works: Doubling of the Genoa-Ventimiglia railway line, stretch between Andora and S. Lorenzo al Mare, 43 km long

Location: Imperia

Project features: the viaduct on the stretch was characterised by continuous changes in type and cross section, for a total of 6 sections built using solutions and equipment suited to satisfying the worksite schedule and requirements. ALPI supplied all the products needed to complete all the works of the viaduct: foundations, columns, piers, pier heads, decks and tunnel entrances. Thanks to its extreme flexibility and the small number of special pieces, the MECCANO system was the ideal choice. At the site of the main station of the city of Imperia, located directly above the River Impero, ALPI supplied the equipments for three decks with a surface area of approx. 1,700 m² each with lightened section of 2.5 m height, for a total of 2,300 m³ per superstructure. The external bridge spans were propped to the ground using ORTHOPLUS and ALPIPROP shorings. At the height of the two municipal roads which run along the river, 4 independent MECCANO 120 portals were built to assure the passage of traffic. For the central superstructure, formwork had to be built which was able to assure two portals of a width of at least 9 m for the passing river below, indispensable given the typical morphology of Western Liguria and its rivers, which are often subject to flooding in the event of heavy rains. For the central span, 40 m long and approx. 36 m wide, ALPI created a scaffolding built of 7 truss structures each 36 m in length, in correspondence to the weight of the viaduct in the various areas two different types of shoring were used: one lightweight, built using MECCANO 120 components, and one heavy made using the HEA 240 system. The completion of this stretch of the Genoa-Ventimiglia line, which still had a single track, required particularly complex design choices due to the conformation of the territories it crosses, and presented a great challenge. In this sense, ALPI worked together with the client in the choice of equipment and the most appropriate solutions for the completion of the works, fully respecting the schedule. At the same time, the width of the range and full modularity of its products made the design efforts far more simple and assured the feasibility of the project.
