Railway bridge

A bridge between innovation and quality.

Works: Railway Bridge over the River Tassone, part of the Milan-Bologna high-speed line

Location: Reggio Emilia

Project features: the solid section pre-compressed concrete superstructure, cast in-situ, has a total length of approx. 75 m and a thickness of 1.5 m, divided into three spans of each approx. 25 m, for a total transversal width of 13.6 m. The particularity of this project is strictly linked to the orography of the land. One bridge span in fact crosses the state road in the municipality of Reggio Emilia, which could not be closed to traffic, while another crosses the River Tassone, just to one side of the A1 motorway. The challenge was to keep the very low tolerances of the contracting authority, due to the high transit speed of the trains. A solution was adopted using truss beams from the HEA 240 system which held the formwork made from the MECCANO system suspended from above using tie bars. T 100 towers were used on the abutments. The superstructure was cast in a single phase, with excellent results: the side level of the bridge was full in line with the "fair-faced" quality of the casting. The utmost attention was paid to worksite safety, in particular when positioning the formwork of the span crossing the river and also on the other crossing the state road. The final phase was done at night, when the underlying road was closed.
