Renovation of the Milan Central Station
Flexibility and cost savings, these are the marks of MECCANO.
Works: Renovation of the Milan Central Railway Station
Location: Milan
Project features: to renovate the Central Station in Milan, a structure was required which wrapped around the shaped vaults, acting as a working platform for the restoration workers. This represented the perfect challenge between the need to carry out the work in the best possible manner while keeping the station running. In fact, a solution was required which caused no interruption for such an important railway hub, nor impeded access to the trains by the passengers. For this reason, ALPI proposed a safe structure, designed to seal the scaffolding hermetically in the "Train Gallery" and the "Head Gallery", to avoid any risk of falling objects or dust. The structure implemented was composed of towers, truss beams and mobile carriages, all built from standard MECCANO components. The towers were positioned along the walls in correspondence to the existing columns, and were connected at the top by truss beams which acted as tracks for the mobile carriages. Their mobility was assured by a roller system. The carriages ran at a minimum height of 10 m, and were composed of six working platforms, at a distance of 2.5 m, for a total height of 15 m. The MECCANO system was chosen for its modularity, extreme lightness, great strength and excellent flexibility to the different wall surfaces, covered with ornaments and other rich decorations. The ALPI design department worked alongside the construction company, in particular for the identification of solutions which guaranteed the development of highly resistant structures with low costs.
