Sports centre Tor Vergata, Rome

A race to the future.

Works: Sport City

Location: Tor Vergata, Rome

Project features: the "Città dello Sport" complex, designed by the famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, will host football pitches, athletics tracks, shops, offices, housing, libraries, a bocce court, the new "Palazzo dello Sport", the future site of the rectorate of the University of "Tor Vergata" and the Swimming Stadium. And it is specifically to the latter which ALPI has delivered its products and services. A veritable challenge, in view of the original and highly complex architectural shapes features in the new Roman swimming stadium. In this sense, the works management made some highly demanding requests, including the absolute perfection of the exposed concrete surface finish: even the mark of a simple screw would not have been acceptable. To respond to the design coherence of continuity, the tie rods had to have a regular vertical pitch, and the drawing of the modular plywood could be only 3 m x 1.25 m. All of these needs were satisfied through the assembly versatility of the MECCANO system and the optimisation of the formwork for the type of concrete, which guaranteed the impeccable visual end result. The surrounding wall is 13 m high, creatively built with a range of different sized angled diaphragms, some of which are staggered, others overlapping and linked together. A spectacular building, which counts inside around 190 archeswith lengths from 30 m to 70 m. The backbone is a 130 m longitudinal arch, which has to support the whole upper steel and glass structure. In addition to the MECCANO and ORTHOPLUS systems, the worksite was equipped with 12,000 m² of ALPIDECK slab system and 4,000 m²of MIDIPLUS wall formwork.
